Black Baby Lips, Beware of the Causes

Baby's lips are black or appear bluish and darker can be a symptom of a serious disorder. This condition must be watched out for and should receive medical treatment immediately. In medical terms, the condition of baby's lips is black or purplish blue and looks darker can be caused by a condition called cyanosis. In white people, cyanosis is more clearly seen with a bluish or purplish color on the skin, whereas in dark people will be more pronounced in membrane areas such as the lips and gums which become darker or blackish. Cyanosis occurs when the supply of oxygen carried by blood cells to the body's tissues is too little or inadequate. Bluish or blackish lip color is caused by hemoglobin levels that are too little in blood cells that are near the surface of the skin. Hemoglobin is a molecule that allows red blood cells to carry oxygen. High oxygen levels will cause bright red hemoglobin, while low oxygen will make hemoglobin appear bluish in color. Baby's lips are black or blue and look darker is a common clinical condition found in newborns. This condition can be experienced by newborns 5 to 10 minutes after birth and usually lasts for one to two days. This condition called acrocyanosis is due to the baby's blood vessels contracting accompanied by increased oxygen expenditure. However, if cyanosis occurs continuously, it needs to be evaluated immediately. Because these conditions can be associated with potentially life-threatening diseases such as heart problems, metabolic disorders, infections and others. If the baby's lips are black or bluish in children under 2 years, it could be a symptom of respiratory syntical virus. This is a common condition for children before they turn 2 years old. But still make sure the cause of baby's lips change color by consulting a pediatrician.

Types of cyanosis

There are two main categories of cyanosis, namely central cyanosis and peripheral cyanosis. Check out the further explanation below.

Central Cyanosis

This condition generally causes a bluish tint on the lips, tongue, and body skin. Central cyanosis has many possible causes. Congenital heart disease is a condition that causes blood with a low supply of oxygen to pump throughout the body. The congenital heart disease that can cause cyanosis includes transposition of large arteries, pulmonary atresia, tetralogy of Fallot, tricuspid atresia, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, truncus arteriosus, and disturbed aortic arches. Other conditions that can cause central cyanosis include:
  • Problems with blood flow to and from the lungs, this condition can be caused by blocked arteries or abnormal blood vessel connections between the heart and lungs.
  • Fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema) caused by congestive heart failure.
  • Hemoglobin disorders, conditions where the blood cannot carry oxygen properly throughout the body.

Peripheral cyanosis

In this condition, the tips of the hands and feet will appear blue. This type of cyanosis can usually be caused by several things, including:
  • Babies who cry shortly after birth
  • Cold air
  • Prolonged seizures
  • Shock
Black or bluish baby's lips caused by certain clinical conditions will usually disappear by identifying and treating the underlying cause. The recovery time also varies greatly, depending on what caused it. What you need to understand is, although lip color changes do not always indicate an emergency, but color changes in baby's lips are also not a symptom that can be ignored. Especially if the baby's lips are black and bluish accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty breathing and chest pain, it can be a sign that can be life-threatening. You are advised to bring your child to the emergency room immediately if you see any of these symptoms.
